*SERVICE DISRUPTION 16/01/2026* Due to heavy congestion - the 51 / 53 services are unable to use their pre-planned diversion routes. The 51 and 53 services are now operating as follows:

  • 51 to divert in both directions via Old Heath Road, Abbot's Road, Mersea Road and Roberts Road.
  • 53 to divert in both directions via Barn Hall Avenue, Churchill Way, Normandy Avenue, Mersea Road and Roberts Road.

The following bus stops will not be served in both directions:

  • Garrison Church [51/53]
  • Recreation Ground [51/53]
  • Worsnop House [51/53]
  • Scarletts Road [51/53]
  • Barn Hall Avenue - towards Rowhedge only [53]
  • Post Office [53]
  • Abbot's Road [53]

*The 51 and 53 services will remain on these diversions until 20:00hrs* 

Following 20:00hrs - the 51 and 53 service will either return to previous diversion route or normal line of route.


Military Road, Colchester is closed for roadworks. The permit's end date is: 16 Jan 23:00 GMT.

Due to the location of the road closure, the 51, 53 and 53A services will be placed on diversion:

51 / 53 / 53A

Towards Wivenhoe/Rowhedge: The 51, 53 and 53A services will divert via Mersea Road, Abbot's Road and Old Heath Road. The following bus stops will not be served:

  • Military Road
  • Lookers Garage
  • Garrison Church
  • Recreation Ground
  • Worsnop House
  • Scarletts Road
    • Canwick Grove
    • Unity Close
    • Churchill Way
    • Brittany Way
    • Stalin Road
    • Roosevelt Way
  • Barn Hall Avenue
  • Old Heath Post Office
  • Abbot's Road

Towards Colchester City Centre: The 51 service will divert, after serving Recreation Ground, via Wimpole Road, Brook Street, East Hill, Queen Street/St Botolphs Street and Osborne Street. The following bus stops will not be served:

  • Garrison Church
  • Mill Street
  • Military Road
