How to Get Your Free Bus Pass
Are you eligible?
If you live in England and reach the state pension age, you're good to go!
Apply online
You can apply through your local council up to 28 days before your birthday.
What you'll need
Complete the form and upload a passport style photo, proof of identity and address.
Ride Free!
Once your pass arrives, you can enjoy free off-peak travel between 9.30am to 11pm weekdays and all weekend!

FAQs
You qualify for a senior pass in York once you have reached the state pension age. You can check your eligibility on the UK Government website.
You can only apply for a bus pass from us if your 'sole or principal residence' is located in our area. To get a bus pass in York, you can:
- Apply online
- Apply in person
- Apply by post
Someone else can apply on your behalf, but they'll need to provide copies of your documents and a suitable photograph of you.
Online
To complete an online application, you'll need to create an account in our travel passes portal and provide:
- A digital photograph (get GOV.UK information about digital ID photographs)
- A digital copy of a document to prove your age (copy of passport, birth certificate, driving licence, medical card)
- A digital copy of a document to prove your address (copy of a current gas or electricity bill)
Please check you have access to digital documents stored on your device, or you can take photographs using the camera on your device, before starting the online form.
In person
You must contact the concessionary Bus Passes Team to make an appointment to apply in person at our Customer Centre at West Offices.
You must bring:
- Proof of your age (copy of passport, birth certificate, driving licence, medical card)
- Proof of your address (copy of a current gas or electricity bill)
You don't need to bring a passport-sized photograph - we'll take your photograph while you wait.
By posts
Contact the Concessionary Bus Passes Team to request a postal form to apply for your older person's bus pass by post.
With your postal application form, you must include:
- A passport-sized photograph (with your name on the back)
- Proof of your age (copy of passport, birth certificate, driving licence, medical card)
- Proof of your address (copy of a current gas or electricity bill)
The bus pass is valid in the region or country it was issued in (England, Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland), but not across the UK. However, some cross-border services may accept passes from neighbouring countries.
They can be used after 9am Monday to Friday, and all day at weekends and Bank Holidays. After 9.30am, if travelling outside York and North Yorkshire.
The English National Concessionary Scheme hours for free bus travel nationally are 9:30am to 11pm, however, the York and North Yorkshire scheme allows for concessionary travel from 9am until the end of service.
Other bus pass rules apply.
- Services incorporating a special amenity element (such as Park & Ride) may incur a charge, for example, passholders boarding at Park & Ride sites must pay a £1.40 return fare.
- Passes are not valid for use on excursions, tour buses or race-day shuttles.
- Passes are not generally valid for free travel on long-distance scheduled coach services such as National Express - check with the coach operator before travelling.
- Passes are not valid in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland.
If lost, you will need to pay £12.50 and apply for a replacement. Simply contact the Concessionary Bus Passes Team.
If your pass is damaged, as long as you return the damaged Senior Pass to us, it can be replaced free of charge. Contact the Concessionary Bus Passes Team.
If your pass gets stolen, you will need to report it to the Police and obtain a crime reference number. You can then obtain a replacement free of charge by contacting the Concessionary Bus Passes Team, quoting a valid police reference number.
Passes are valid for the duration of your lifetime. However, if your pass is due to expire and your address has not changed, it will be renewed automatically and sent in the post at least 1 week before your old pass expires.
If you've changed your address, please contact the Concessionary Bus Passes Team as soon as possible so that your new pass goes to the correct address.
Also, contact the Concessionary Bus Passes Team if you've not received your new pass 1 week before your old pass expires.
