Free Travel every Sunday in March
Council provides a great incentive to use the bus, with fare free Sundays planned throughout March
Local people across Portsmouth will be able to travel by bus for free on Sundays in March.
The Portsmouth City Council designed scheme will help families, and other passengers save money this spring, all thanks to a £48 million investment in Portsmouth, called the Bus Service Improvement Plan. An initiative which will transform bus travel for Portsmouth residents.
Fare free Sundays are designed to encourage more people to use the bus, an affordable and convenient way of travelling that also helps to reduce emissions and congestion by taking cars off the road.
Portsmouth City Council has collaborated with local bus companies to ensure bus users will be able to travel for free on 5, 12, 19 and 26 March 2023 within the Portsmouth City Council boundary.
Free weekend travel is just one of the council's plans for buses, which have started to rollout this year, and are set to include discounted tickets, more frequent buses, earlier morning travel and much more.
Cllr Lynne Stagg, Cabinet Member for Traffic and Transportation, said:
"I am delighted to say that we are able to bring fare free Sundays to Portsmouth in March. Travelling by bus allows you to sit back and take in the world from the window, enjoying the ride. And making it free to get around, the scheme will help to connect people and communities, and provide a boost to the local economy by getting people out and enjoying our vibrant city.
There is a reason the bus is the most popular form of public transport across the UK, and this is our chance to remind the people of Portsmouth, how convenient and easy it really is, with an opportunity like this there’s never been a better time to get onboard!"
Simon Goff, Managing Director, First Solent said:
“We are thrilled to be working with Portsmouth City Council to offer Fare free Sundays in March. This is a great chance for local people to try the bus for free, have a great day out around Portsmouth and do their bit to help reduce congestions and emissions. We can’t wait to welcome you onboard.”
